Copenhagen Restaurant & Cafe Guide
This Copenhagen travel post is dedicated to all the foodies out there! One of the focuses of our trip in Copenhagen was the gastronomic scene in the city so as a result, we visited many unique, interesting and down-right ridiculously 'so worth it' restaurants in Copenhagen. There were also heaps of places I wanted to check out myself so after adding all of those onto the itinerary, we ended up spending a massive portion of our time eating our way around Copenhagen, checking out all that the city had to offer both in terms of its local cuisine as well as our own international favourites. Here is my monster guide to the best restaurants, cafes and places to eat and dine at in Copenhagen. From snacks and cheap eats to world class Michelin star dining, we've managed to eat it all so we could share it with you below..
1) FOR THE ADVENTUROUS DINER..
BROR: Opened by two former NOMA sous-chefs, BROR focuses mainly on the Nordic cuisine but adds a unique 'BROR' touch. Its menu which is best described as 'an intersection between comfort and innovation - both in taste and choice of ingredients'. The ingredients used in preparing the dishes can be quite unexpected like some of the dishes we had above. Pop by yourself to find out exactly what they were made of - I don't want to spoil it for you![ezcol_1half]
2) FOR ROMANTIC FINE DINING..
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end][ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end][ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]ANTE: For romantic fine dining in Copenhagen, go no further than ANTE, the sibling of BROR. This mysterious restaurant is rather nondescript out front - it's a plain building with nothing much other than a small sign, with curtains drawn completely closed. Open only from Thursday to Saturday, dining at ANTE is not your regular experience. The restaurant fits just 18 people, with one sitting per night. When you head in, it's basically pitch black inside other than the candles and a few lights. The multi-course food menu is so so tasty, experimental and served with a dash of humour and fun. Juice pairings exist if you don't drink alcohol! Some of the juices we had included rhubarb juice, grilled pea juice (such an acquired taste, but it ended up being really refreshing 10 sips later), Spanish Chervil tea, carrot kombucha and brown cheese milk. Dishes included lobster, crayfish and a suspiciously innocent looking mackerel sperm sandwich that ended up tasting all good.
3) FOR STREET FOOD TRUCKS..
[ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]COPENHAGEN STREET FOOD TRUCK HALL @ PAPER ISLAND: Copenhagen has its very own permanent food truck hall in an old paper factory! The whole place is made of recycled or donated materials and stallholders are encouraged to be eco-friendly in all that they do. There are 35 stalls+ serving all sorts of international cuisines including Mexican, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian and Danish food, of course. Obviously I had to try some sushi here - it's from Banzai Sushi's stall and it was YUM! This place is packed with locals who eat lunch here during their meal breaks, but don't worry there are plenty of seats and communal benches to sit at.
4) FOR PARISIAN BREAKFAST..
VOULEZ VOUS: We found this cosy Parisian cafe on Instagram and checked it out the morning we arrived because it was really close to our hotel (Hotel SP34). The place is super cute and runs across two storeys. Breakfast here is homely, tasty and fresh and the juices also freshly squeezed.
5) FOR COPENHAGEN'S BEST BAKERY..
SANKT PEDERS BAGERI: Famous as ever, Sankt Peders Bageri was also just down the street from our hotel. We visited this place 3 times total. The first time it was closed early, the second time it was sold out and the third time, we just happened to pass by whilst on a walking tour so weren't prepared in the stomach department to scoff down more food. But you should definitely check this out! It's Copenhagen's oldest bakery and on Wednesdays, they sell their special 'Wednesday snail / cinnamon roll' (onsdagssnegle) which is so popular that they sell 4000+ (!!) every time. It's crazy thinking about those figures..
6) FOR A VEGETABLE FOCUSED (BUT NOT VEGETARIAN) DINING EXPERIENCE..
[ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end][ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end][ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]MANFREDS: Manfreds was created by NOMA descendants Christian F Puglisi and Kim Rossen who wanted to cater to locals with laid back, quality food. It was originally a vegetarian restaurant but these days the focus has been shifted to being veggie focused with a side of meat. It is 99% organic at Manfreds and they have their own farm which they grow the restaurant produce. The key is to find ways to use the entire food so that nothing goes to waste. The menu here changes every single day so you never know what you are expecting! Try the beef tatar if you can - it's famous for it.
7) FOR AFTERNOON TEA & CAKES..
LA GLACE: If tea and cakes is your thing, then you're going to have to head to La Glace. Their house speciality is the 'sportskage' which is crushed nougat in whipped cream, finished with a macaroon bottom decorated with caramelised pastry. Seriously, macaroon cake bottoms taste ridiculous! It's the oldest and one of the best confectionaries in Denmark and is right in the middle of Strøget making it really convenient to visit.
8) FOR DANISH BREAKFAST / LUNCH IN VESTEBRO..
MAD AND KAFFE CAFE: This cafe is situated in the hip area of Vestebro and because it's out of the city, it's often filled with locals. For breakfast, you can pick from an assortment of small dishes and for lunch, they serve heaps of Danish open faced sandwiches which is honestly, the best way to eat a sandwich because you get less bread and more toppings in your stomach. Definitely come here for a bite if you are in the area.[ezcol_1half]
9) FOR FRESH SEAFOOD..
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end]FISKEBAREN: If you're a big fan of fish, shellfish and seafood in general, head to the Meatpacking district of Copenhagen for some fresh stuff here. The trout tartar entree here is so great. I love how much tartar is served here, it's one of my favourite dishes! There are a number of other restaurants in this area too so you'll be spoilt for choice if you decide to head to this side of town.
10) FOR REALLY GOOD SUSHI IN COPENHAGEN..
KARMA SUSHI: That's right! I ain't going no where without trying out the local take on sushi. Being my favourite food, I knew I had to hunt down at least one amazing sushi restaurant to try and after reading many reviews and checking out just as many menus, I ended up booking a table at KARMA. It's a close walk from Nyhavn though despite its proximity to tourist-land, it was surprisingly filled with more locals than tourists. The sushi is beautifully presented (my camera thanks them) and is equally as tasty. If you check online, they have specials on different days of the week and when we went, there was a tuna special which we ordered alongside a plate of nigiri. The tuna poke bowl was ridiculous, I think these poke salad things are going to be my next big food obsession..
11) FOR GLUTEN FREE TACOS..
BLUETACO: This was a bit of a random place to visit as it was in Norrebro but as we were in the area, we thought we might as well take the chance to try these gluten-free tacos. Like gluten-free bread, it's a little more dry and tough than the normal variety but the toppings are really quite mouth watering! There are quite a few vegan options here too so if you're vegan or gluten intolerant, this is a great place to enjoy tacos.
12) FOR VEGAN ICE-CREAM..
NICECREAM: After tacos, we decided to walk down to Nicecream to try out the 'vegan' ice-cream. Being lactose intolerant, ice-cream is not something my body enjoys so it's not something I ever really crave so when I read that this was dairy-free ice-cream, I wanted to see what it was about. Turns out it resembles more of a really thick smoothie or banana-based ice-cream than real ice-cream but it's delicious, especially the toppings that they add on top.
13) FOR TRADITIONAL SMØRREBRØD..
RESTAURANT PAL
Æ
GADE:
This newly opened restaurant serves delicious smørrebrød (Danish open faced sandwiches). As open faced sandwiches are so top heavy and loaded with different ingredients, no bite ever tastes the same. If you're in Denmark, you've got to try one of these because it's their local specialty!
14) FOR WORLD-CLASS 3 MICHELIN STAR DINING..
[ezcol_1half][/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end][/ezcol_1half_end][ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third_end][/ezcol_1third_end][ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third_end][/ezcol_1third_end][ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third_end][/ezcol_1third_end][ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third_end][/ezcol_1third_end][ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_1third_end][/ezcol_1third_end]GERANIUM: Saving the best til last.. it's Geranium. Our last meal in Copenhagen was celebrated at none other than Geranium which received its third Michelin star earlier this year and was ranked world no. 28 by The World's 50 best. Come here for a mouthwatering 20+ course modern Scandinavian dining experience like no other. Just have a listen to a few of their dishes..
Jerusalem Artichoke leaves, walnut oil & rye vinegar
'Dillstone' mackerel, horseradish & frozen juice from pickled dill
Creamy summer vegetables with oyster, peas & pickled elderflowers
Morrell, sunflower seeds & truffle
Ice-cream with beeswax, pollen & honey with cloudberries ..
They also do juice pairings as well which is something I just love the concept of.Dining at Geranium is more like a culinary experience. The way dishes are served, presented and created are really quite special and the atmosphere is relaxed and spacious. It's definitely a three Michelin star choice if you want to participate in some fine dining for Copenhagen chefs really know what they are doing.
