Our new home: bedroom tour!
It's been three months in our new place and things are slowly coming together!As our new home is our 'first home' (yay, #firsthomeowners!), we had to essentially furnish it from scratch. Both of us did bring with us some of our existing furniture - Tom brought his bed from his old home whilst I left mine back at my parents. However, we didn't have much else for the bedroom yet and so I wanted to take my time and build Pinterest boards to see what would work best. Lucky for me, Tom's pretty easy on the decor as long as it's functional so I had pretty much free reign. The look I was going for was a clean and airy feel with hints of mid-century decor and plenty of space for my plants. I wanted it to be bright and calming, and to have the feeling of merging the line between the outdoors and in. And there was this one bedside table I knew I just wanted to have - the West Elm mid-century nightstand that was popping up everywhere on Pinterest. So it was the absolute perfect partnership when the West Elm team got in touch to collaborate in helping bringing our new bedroom together.Here's a tour of our bedroom makeover!
[gallery columns="2" ids="16982,16983"]I've always had my mind set on a mid-century inspired dresser and the matching West Elm mid-century dresser worked perfectly with the nightstands I saw online. I just love the contrast of the wood finish against the white walls. It's something I've never appreciated before as I was so used to having white furniture against white walls. So I was happily surprised to see the beautiful added texture and contrast when using rich wooden finishes like this.As we have similar coloured hardwood floors, I wanted to add extra contrast and brighten up the room so used the ever popular souk rug to reflect light throughout the room. The moment you lay a rug like this down, the look of the whole room changes and everything instantly feels brighter and more homely and warm. Who knew a simple update like a rug could change a room so much!?The pretty gold mirrored tray was the perfect accessory for keeping all your bedside goodies organised. I love how I could add a touch of nature through decor pieces like these as well. A simple cactus ring dish adds a really nice accent to the room and is also great for storing all those rings as well.
[gallery columns="2" ids="16989,16990"]With the decor, our existing bed frame was the starting point for putting together the decor of the room. It's got a grey upholstered bedhead and wooden base which seems neutral enough but I actually had no idea how to deal with it at first! I used to own a white bed frame which was super easy to work with because it'd go with everything so working with grey was actually a bit of a challenge for me to begin with. I know it's such a neutral colour but I just wasn't used to that darker shadow behind the pillows and linen. However, I knew I wanted to incorporate the mid-century nightstands so I tied the colours together with the natural wooden frames above the bed. In the future, I can see some cute long rugs along each side of the bed to bring in some extra colour and contrast between the floors and the nightstand!
Of course, plants had to be everywhere! The space really does change completely with a little added greenery. It just adds an extra dimension and makes the room feel fresh and alive.
For bedding, I have always loved the feel of linen. We went with these neutral linen covers and matching pillow cases. They're clean and crisp, and are perfect for a good night's sleep. Some other finishing touches we added to this room include the calming print of the ocean which originally I was thinking of hanging in the living room but have since decided it was a great fit for the empty wall next to our window. I also love a bit of rattan and straw so included these accents amongst the decor too. Of course, Totoro made the shot hiding in the corner!
All in all, I'm completely in love with how this space has turned out and am super excited to be able to start sharing our house decorating progress with you all starting with this room tour! We still have lots to do at home - it's really difficult to juggle trying to work on the house whilst working from home as you can get so distracted sometimes. But my little plant room and reading corner is slowly coming together which I'm excited to share next. We're still waiting for our couch for the living room which we ordered at the end of last year so that will probably be the room I tackle after that. Yay!
